valentine (the get up kids, 1999)

Dearest ______,

Can you believe it’s been more than 10 years since The Get Up Kids’ Something to Write Home About album?  You see the boys now and they could  easily pass for your new colleague or your fellow parent from the PTA.

And yet that voice is still there; and those songs still manage to bring back feelings, if not memories, to mind.  Just like that guy from Murakami’s Norwegian Wood when he hears the Beatles song and he gets a flood of memories about a girl from his past.  I personally have nothing on Valentine, but hey, it’s just a really great song.

This further asserts my notion of musicians having always been, and always being, bearers of  artifacts from your youth.   As everyone grows older- and no doubt that they do too- musicians will always have the gift of dictating, shaping eras and points in one’s life.

Will you be my Valentine, if I’m a world away?

Apologies are breaking me.

The constants aren’t so constant anymore.

The constants aren’t so constant anymore.

The constants aren’t so constant anymore.

Love,

Karlita
