Le Rouge et Le Noir

Dearest ______,

Photographic providence in colours, that is all.

p1370758

Sometimes I wish I cared for actual human interactions more. I am constantly in awe of people who are at ease with making small talk with other people strangers because I’m pretty sure that if I just learn how to say “Hi, how are you?”, I’d be surprised with what I’ll know about people. Maybe they’re downright mean, but maybe they’re only waiting for someone to talk to. I’ve always dreaded the latter more, which has probably deprived me of many a lost narrative out there. Compelling tales never told, secrets shared to someone else instead.

I try. But more often than not, I just make do with made-up stories about people in my head. Heehee.

Love,

Karlita

Birds

Dearest ______,

Over a year ago, I took pictures of white storks perched on their nests atop some Roman ruins. There were hardly any trees around that part of the old citadel of Rabat.

p1370805

It’s fascinating how animals adapt to their environments. If humans could be as pliant and less stubborn about how correct we think we always are, I bet we’d all evolve faster (or at least make better choices).

White storks are said to be sacred symbols of Juno, the Roman goddess of hearth and home. I guess this week is as good as any for me to start embodying them.

Or her.

Love,

Karlita

urban

Dearest ______,

There is a particular Urban myth that’s proven to be more convincing than most folklore:

it’s this belief that one can get more from life in the city.

1

As with most tales, this thought tickles some people’s imaginations.

Is this why we flock into cities to lead lives fuelled by caffeine  and our relentless pursuit of personal causes?

lake tekapo: houses

Dearest ______,

Architecture has always been both advocate and adversary to nature. As an ally, it directly responds to elements present in the natural environment it inhabits- works around them, mirrors them.

P1350065

On another hand, it also aims to question these very same elements by introducing aesthetics and technologies that ultimately make built environments truly habitable for their purpose.

strange geographies

Dearest ______,

Strange geographies are:-

1
Where faces of mountains remind you of the swishing of an elaborate evening dress. Dots of plant life, a brocade of green and gold appliques.
2
Where eyes feast on jagged mounds of vanilla ice cream, every which way they hungrily look.
3
Where one gets a surreal feeling of having reached the ends of the earth.  One more step and you’re flung completely off the grid.
4
Where sheep, in their staggering numbers, simply don’t give a shit.
5
Where two girls most literally in the middle of nowhere, traverse one huge and barren field.

When you stare long enough, you realize how you’ve inevitably been drawn into a bigger picture.

Because somewhere in the cosmos, someone else is looking at you with the same sense of wonder, then unease, then realization that we are all part of one infinitely vast, infinitely strange science.

With this in mind, you will further understand how strangeness is only, in fact, relative.

geraldine, the quaint

Dearest ______,

Whenever I hear the word quaint, I think of Victorian chintz, fine bone china with gold inlay, an English garden, Miss Marple’s home in St. Marymead, and now, the quiet little town of Geraldine in New Zealand’s southern isles.

On the way to Lake Tekapo for our friends’ wedding, we stopped after a couple of hours from Christchurch to get brunch at this highly- recommended place in Geraldine called Verde Cafe and Deli.
